Austin's Agent Ribbons Brighten Up Circle Bar Tonight by Emma Boyce Tonight, Agent Ribbons plays their fourth New Orleans show at the Circle Bar on St. Charles Ave. According to guitarist and lead vocalist Natalie Ribbons, they “love playing the Circle Bar [because] there is always such a great crowd and the place has a great vibe.” They are also drawn to New Orleans cemeteries and the St. Louis Cathedral.
Agent Ribbons may have your typical band beginning, two talented musicians serendipitously meeting in a record store. The band, which includes Natalie Ribbons, drummer Lauren Ribbons, and sometimes violinist Naomi Ribbons, originally hails from Sacramento, but now hole up in Austin, a hub for up-and-coming musicians.
Natalie’s hair, a bright red bob, stands out just as much as her voice, a combination of early Blondie with an alternative vibe and a smokey overlay.
Natalie, responsible for the band’s whimsical lyrics, walks around her neighborhood to get ideas for songs and then matches the lyrics with guitar riffs.
“At band practice,” she says, “we flesh [the songs] out and add nuances on drums and xylophone. We like to include as much nuance and suggestions of the band as possible.”
With influences ranging from forties female jazz vocalists to The Zombies, the band oscillates between pop, grunge and show tunes. Their love for orchestral pop also comes through in songs like "The Wolf."
Since their founding in 2006, the band has booked gigs both nationally and internationally. The band members survived solely on gigs for years. While they recorded their first tracks in Spain, the band was actually banned from the United Kingdom for ten years after being discovered without a work visa.
“We had a manager that said we didn’t need a work visa if we told them we were on holiday,” Natalie said with a laugh.
That’s a difficult story to backup when you’re wearing “loud polyester outfits and holding guitar cases.”
