Attorney General Eric Holder to Detail Federally-Mandated NOPD Reforms It's taken about a year and a half, but the federal government is set to take over the New Orelans Police Department. This afternoon, U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder will detail the federally-mandated reforms to the NOPD, known as a consent decree. The basis for the reforms the feds will enact stem from the damning U.S. Department of Justice report on the deficiencies of the NOPD.
That report called out the Department for over-aggressive use of force, making illegal stops, disciminating based on race and sexual orientation and allowing systemic corruption to fester in the detail system. Since the beginning of Mayor Mitch Landrieu's term, the Department rolled out reforms in many of those areas, and began working with the DOJ. But the feds appear poised to oversee the reform process from here on out. A consent decree is agreed to by the two parties involved, and generally overseen by the courts.
The announcement on the consent decree will be announced at a 3:45 p.m. news conference at Gallier Hall, according to Mayor Mitch Landrieu's office. NoDef will have live updates from the press conference. |
