Archie Jefferson's Wife Dies in Hospital, Murder Wasn't a Shooting

Archie Jefferson's wife died overnight as a result of injuries she suffered in a brutal Friday morning attack. The attack was not a shooting, according to police. Sandra Peters Jefferson, 58, died about 1:30 a.m. of blunt force trauma to the head, according to the Orleans Parish Coroner. Sandra Jefferson is the wife of Archie Jefferson, who is the brother of incarcerated former Congressman Bill Jefferson. Sandra Jefferson was found lying in a pool of blood at her home in the 3400 block of S. Broad St. around 3:30 a.m. Friday morning.

Police initially classified the injury as a gunshot to the head, but doctors later said they found no evidence of a bullet wound, according to a NOPD news release issued this afternoon. Officials are planning to conduct an autopsy to determine the cause of death, which could take place today.

Police said Archie Jefferson found his wife and called 911. Sandra Peters Jefferson was then taken to a hospital, where she remained in critical condition. Yesterday, The Times-Picayune quoted an unnamed source who said Archie Jefferson was a suspect in the case, but police offered no further information today about a suspect or motive.

"Detectives conducted some interviews yesterday and continue to gather information and collect evidence in this case, which has been elevated from an 'aggravated assault' to a 'homicide' investigation," the news release said.
