Defender Picks

All Tomorrow's Parties

With the the coconuts and the shoes displayed on the mantle, it is time to de-Mardi Gras our apartments. You’re on your own with all that glitter, but Uber is helping locals donate their beads to a good cause. The ride-sharing service announced that they will pick up your extra beads and deliver them to Arc of Greater New Orleans’ “Beads by the Pound” program.

Arc has long provided employment to citizens with intellectual and developmental disabilities through the program. Participants clean, sort, weigh and repackage the used beads. The end products are then resold for use during future Carnivals. Proceeds from the sales are split between the workers.

Pickups are slated for Saturday (2.13) from 10a.m. until 2p.m. One need only to open he Uber app and slide to the “RECYCLE” button. A Uber SUV will be summoned to pick up your extra shiny things.

While the service is free, Uber does have a few requests. The company asks that beads be bagged in advance. In addition, the service notes that drivers can not leave their cars unattended and asks that donates meet the SUV at the street. Lastly, patience is urged.
