All Mixed Up: Dragon's Den Hosts Fundraiser for Young DJ'sNew Orleans’ next generation of musicians is rising, and they do not all play horns. Friday night, The Dragon’s Den (435 Esplanade) is hosting an event from 10 pm to 3 am for NOLA MIX, a local program that supports the growth of musicians and DJs of all ages and talent, featuring DJs from around New Orleans. DJ’s and artists include Brice Nice, DJ Otto, DJ Proppa Bear, DJ Pr_ck, DJ DubLa, DJ Yamin, DJ Tony Skratchere, DJ BeesKnees, and Slangston Hughes with Fo on the Flo.
Co-founded by Ben Epstein, otherwise known as DJ Yamin, and Jerald White in 2011, students learn about DJing and music production, including scratching, mixing, technology, art and the history of DJing.
“It gives kids not only a place to go to after school, but it gives them a skill that they can bring back to their community,” says co-founder Epstein. “It is also about life skills that they can apply to their own lives.”
With their newfound skills they can play for their community and, in time, hold their own shows.
“They become like little entrepreneurs,” says Epstein.
Epstein and other teachers in the program go beyond simply the half-an-hour music lesson and also help to mentor students.
“We do mentoring stuff as well, so if people have homework or issues at home we can help. We try to reach the whole person,” says Epstein.
According to Epstein, local DJs have been really supportive about donating their time for the NOLA MIX event. Many see the event as giving back.
“Everybody has been really excited…to pass along what they have done to another generation of students. They are contributing to the New Orleans DJ music and culture,” says Epstein.
A suggested $10 donation is requested at the door, but anything helps. The Dragon’s Den will also donate 25 percent of all its food and beverage sales to NOLA MIX, so drink up in support.
