Air Sex Competitors Get Down Tomorrow Night at Republic

by Mary-Devon Dupuy

Tonight at the Republic, funny people from all over the city can take a stab at the act that even Howard Stern said was a little too raunchy for network television. Chris Trew (the dude with the big beard) and the rest of the team at The New Movement Theater are hosting an Air Sex Competition at 8pm, and anyone is invited to register to win a spot at the Air Sex World Championships in Austin.

“Air Sex,” is a lot like air guitar, except the guitar is an invisible person and the mock strumming is mimed lovemaking. Trew said it all happened five years ago as a one-time parody of air guitar that caught people’s attention, and it’s grown into a national event. There have been three countrywide tours, and two cable appearances featuring Trew.

Trew said that he’s excited to bring the act home.

“We’ve gotten a decent amount of attention for it. Since I’m based in New Orleans it’s nice to do the show here,” he said.

The first person to win an Air Sex Competition in New Orleans was a guy named Dirty D, and Trew said people go all out in their acts. “He [Dirty D] looked like a stereotypical porn star, he had on a red, white, and blue thong, and a mustache. There was another performer named Slut Truffle who is really fantastical and clearly embraced the comedic aspect.” Tonight, the judges will be TNM's Margee Green, standup comedian Andrew Healan, and writer cum internet personality Brett Dykes, better known as Cajun Boy (@thecajunboy).

According to Trew, Slut Truffle placed a small piece of cinderblock into her undergarments before the show as part of her act. The performer took a drill saw to her nether regions during the performance, literally causing sparks to fly from her crotch. Trew encourages people to “create costumes, create personas, get up on stage and do something crazy with an audience of people cheering you on.”

Contestants can apply through Trew’s email address (christrew@gmail.com) by emailing their song choices and stage names. Air Sex fans or those intrigued by the raunchy routine can follow the competitions on Twitter (@airsex).
