5 Alarm Fire in Treme Spreads to Several Houses, Causes Power OutagesUpdated 9:49 PM If you were anywhere near the downtown area late this afternoon, you probably smelled the ominous smoke billowing into the downtown area from N. Robertson Street. Between St. Bernard and Esplanade near N. Claiborne, two homes that were under renovation caught on fire, and embers spread to nearby houses. As the blaze grew, New Orleans firefighters had a massive five-alarm fire on their hands that was still being mopped up nearly five hours later.
The 5-alarm fire was under control by 5:31pm, leaving a total of eight houses damaged, and a large section of the Treme without electricity. The outages stretched to Esplanade and N. Rampart, leaving traffic lights out in the area.
Crews were on the scene around 4:15 p.m after the first alarm bells rang, according to the New Orleans Fire Department. An engine was on the scene is response to a call issued three minutes earlier. A two story house was "fully involved in the fire." The blaze then spread to two abandoned houses.
By 4:43, the fire was upgraded to five alarms and a total of eight structures were involved. As of 8:45, hotspots still remain, and firefighters are still engaged. Damages from the fire ranged from scorched siding to total loss.
"Firefighters had to drag heavy fire hoses through narrow alleys and jump fences to fight several fires," the release stated.
No injuries were reported, but seven people in four families required Red Cross assistance finding lodging, and two other families were forced to stay with relatives as a result of the blaze.
The cause of the fire is unknown at this time. |
