Today in New Orleans: 5.27.12

Today, drink for dogs, honor our Vietnam veterans, Greek out one last night, get your mind blown by the brass of MainLine, or if you’re feeling afternoon blues, go to Kajun’s for 3-sets of Little Freddie King, Guitar Lightnin’ Lee and Alabama Slim. On this day in history, Henry Shreve and his men began the creation of Shreveport (1836), and two regiments of former slaves freed by the Emancipation Proclamation made six unsuccessful charges on the Confederate fortifications at Port Hudson, LA (1863). Back to the present:

Hair of the Dog (Recovery Room, 533 Toulouse St., 10a.m.) Bring your dogs and drink cocktails, where proceeds benefit the LA/SPCA. 504.524.9901.

Vietnam Veterans Memorial (3450 Hwy 90 West, Avondale, 10a.m.) New monument and flag pole honoring Louisiana Vietnam veterans unveiled in today’s Memorial Day event.

NOLA Greek Fest (Greek Orthodox Cathedral, 11:00a.m. - 11:00p.m.) - The annual hedonistic Hellenic party continues on its last day where Robert E. Lee Blvd. meets Bayou St. John. Look for authentic cuisine, a Greek marketplace, and of course – the bouzouki!

Little Freddie King, Guitar Lightnin’ Lee and Alabama Slim (Kajun’s Pub, 5:00p.m.)The karaoke takes a hiatus for blues this evening. Watch Little Freddie King blast the blues in his pimped out suits. Alabama Slim opens with delta, followed by the fast hands of Guitar Lightning’ Lee.

MainLine (Blue Nile, 10p.m.) Formed in September 2010, MainLine is an 8-piece funk/soul brass band with guitars, keyboards and a drum kit. Originals and some covers of James Brown, Earth, Wind and Fire, and MJ.
