According to Plaquemines Parish officials, the explosions was reported at a shallow water platform owned by Black Elk Energy about 25 miles off Grand Isle at 9:15 a.m., and the Coast Guard dispatched crews to put out the fire. Two people are missing, according to the Coast Guard. It was previously reported that Four people were airlifted to West Jeff Medical Center with injures. A total of 9 people involved in the incident were medevaced from the scene. The fire is currently out, according to the Parish, and no oil is believed to be leaking into the Gulf, according to preliminary reports. A total of 26 people were on the facility today. The explosion was reportedly caused by a problem that happened with workers using a torch to cut a 3-in. line that was approximately 75 ft. long. The production platform is in 56 feet of water, according to Coast Guard Capt. Ed Cubanski. An oil sheen is being reported around the platform at a size of 1/2 mi. long by 200 yds. Production at the facility was reported after they started work. Work that was being done on the platform of the oil production facility caused the explosion. The Parish statement did not specify the owner of the platform. ES&H Clean-Up was dispatched to handle any pollution, and they set up a command center in Houma. Multiple Coast Guard boats are on scene, as well as three commercial boats.
