Today in NOLA: 4.09.16

French Quarter fest is reaching a peak today with 23 stages open. After the free fest ends, there are plenty of opportunities to check out even more local music at venues across the Crescent City. On this day in 1864, the Battle of Pleasant Hill led to a Union victory in Louisiana. Now, more to do this Saturday.

The Tennessee Williams Literary Festival breezes into New Orleans today with a special event starring Allen Toussaint, but tomorrow the main panels and events begin. The Houston Rockets vie the Pelicans at home. The band named after a Kerouac short story is in town, and recently formed band TYSSON headlines for Wednesdays at the Square. The Dixiana Bakery, famous for its Sarah Bernhardt Cake (rich wine cake with nuts, red apple jelly glaze and whipped cream) celebrated it’s grand reopening on this day in 1950. Now more things to do this hump day.

John Michael Rouchell's TYSSON Talks About the Future

John Michael Rouchell sits on a splatter painted couch in his living room glued to the television playing Stanley Kubrick’s Barry Lyndon. He’s on a Kubrick kick getting inspiration for his new gig with three-part local band TYSSON. Best known locally for his project, My Name Is John Michael, the singer-songwriter is stepping into a different world, away from jazz and into the modern age of electronics. Alvin Ford Jr., veteran of the Dirty Dozen Brass Band, and Max Moran, who jammed bass with Donald Harrison, join Rouchell in taking the fundamentals of New Orleans music they’ve learned from growing up here to create an energetic, alternative pop sound fit for the future.
