Now click through to find out more about today's happenings: Today's Events: 5/10/11May 10, the birthday of Pinckney Benton Stewart Pinchback, the first person of African American descent to govern a U.S. state. Born in 1837, he served as Louisiana’s 24th governor for a total of 35 days. Pinchback was born to a former slave and master in Macon, Georgia; when his father died, the Pinchback family disowned the wife and children, leaving them to fend for themselves. So when the Civil War began, P.B.S. headed to New Orleans and was commissioned as Company Commander of the ‘Colored Infantry Regiment’, but resigned a year later due to incessant racial prejudice and discrimination. |
