Coffee Shop Talk: An Impending Depression

Is New Orleans Headed Back into the Economic Depressions of the Past?

Each week, Joseph Santiago explores the issues of today over a cup of coffee. Check out his previous installments here

I’m having my coffee reading about a bomb being dropped and how Trump is serving the insurance companies by reducing benefits for the poor, making it harder to get insurance, and threatening to remove additionally protections if Democrats don’t see things his way. From my seat in the café, I listen to one person console another about recently becoming homeless. I interviewed two people last week who were opposed to the civil rights of the American people being infringed, and how greed has made its way into politics. I am having a difficult time shaking all this negativity off.

Coffee Shop Talk: Presidential Protestors

A Conversation With a Trump Voter-Turned-Activist

I’m one of those coffee shop writers. Over the years I have met individuals who have expanded my awareness and become connections for new jobs, events, and experiences, whilst enjoying the caffeinated brews. As a writer with an insatiable curiosity, I decided to use my networking skills to become the Coffee Shop Storyteller of New Orleans. All the stories shared here are from consequential strangers and newfound friends that I meet over a cup of joe.

Louisiana's Leader Give Trump Their Chips

The 24-hour news cycle is quickly turning into a rinse cycle. After Donald Trump ascended the mantle of presumptive Republican nominee, some in the party raced to embrace him. However, other elephants want to wash their hands clean of a candidate with a history of offense, including  misogyny and xenophobia. How does Louisiana stand on The Donald? Click on through.

Party People

Louisiana’s favorite husband-and-wife comedy routine received a big shakeup on Thursday (5.06). Mary Matalin announced that she is no longer a member of the Republican Party, but did not commit to a position on presumptive GOP nominee Donald Trump.

Trump Tagger Hits Quarter

Political pundits have questioned whether G.O.P. frontrunner Donald Trump has an adequate ground game for the general election, but it looks like someone took a rebuttal too literally— and, too far. Residents of the Lower Quarter awoke on Thursday (3.31) to find graffiti using the candidate’s cause on cars and a home.

The Donald Doesn't Duck

Louisiana’s presidential primaries are over, but Donald Trump is not done with The Pelican State. The Donald has never been known as a gracious loser and even though he squeaked out a victory in The Boot, Trump is not content. The G.O.P. frontrunner is now threatening a lawsuit over not receiving as many delegates as he would have liked.

Livingston Plays Trump Card

On Monday (3.21), Donald Trump headed to Washington D.C. to meet with the G.O.P. establishment and smooth over his running feud. While the results of the short-fingered vulgarian’s address to AIPAC remains to be seen, The Donald did pick up an endorsement from Metaire Republican Bob Livingston.

Supporters & Protesters at Trump Rally

On Friday (3.04) night, Donald Trump bought the circus to the Lakefront Airport. The rally was described as one of the rowdiest of the campaign. Outside the hangar, protesters were out in force. Inside the event, the sound was off and constant ejections interrupted the stump speech. At one point, a man holding a "K.K.K. 4 Trump" was even thrown out. Timothy Parris was on the scene to capture it all.

Trump Marred

Donald Trump is coming to town tomorrow and the crowds are expected to be yuge. However, not all of the locals heading to the rally are fans of the GOP frontrunner. A rally titled, “Trumpets Trump Drumpf” is planned to protest against the candidate.

Trump Swings in the Red Stick

The antiestablishment refrains were there also. “Politicians are all talk and no actions. These politicians — the blood suckers, I call them the blood suckers — we’ve got to get rid of them.”
