As One

Innovative Opera and Transgender Illumination Comes to the Marigny

Since its premiere at the Brooklyn Academy of Music in 2014, the Laura Kaminsky-composed chamber opera “As One” has graced numerous stages and found acclaim throughout North America and Europe. Its protagonist Hannah is sung by two voices, baritone and mezzo-soprano, whose interactions, tumult, and equilibrium illustrate her dynamic gender expressions, core character, and growth as a transgender woman. The New Orleans Opera Association is presenting the work for two singers and string quartet this June 2-4 weekend at the Marigny Opera House. 

Louisiana Residents Divided Over LGBTQ Rights and Religious Freedom Laws, Study Says

The sixth installment of the 2017 Louisiana Survey released on Thursday (4.13) reveals that the state’s residents are clearly divided along political lines when it comes to rights for the LGBTQ community. Though public opinion favors the existence of anti-discrimination laws in the workplace, Louisiana is split over “religious-freedom” laws that allow businesses to deny services to same-sex couples on the basis of religion.

On Wednesday (4.13), Governor John Bel Edwards made good on a campaign promise and signed an executive order rescinding Bobby Jindal’s previous religious freedom order. In addition, the current Governor issued a second order  aimed at protecting all citizens including transgendered Louisianans from discrimination.

Buck Angel Wins FTM Case Against Former French Quarter Body Piercing Shop Owner

A California court ruled in favor of transgender female-to-male porn star Buck Angel’ last week in a spousal support case that contested the validity of his former marriage to Elayne Angel, former owner of French Quarter body-piercing shop Rings of Desire. Elayne Angel had filed suit earlier this year claiming Angel was not a man because he does not have a phallus.

“I’ll only write music if I feel there’s something to express through that means,” says Madison Turner. The folk-punk singer-songwriter plays at Hey Cafe Thursday, June 5. Before writing and recording her recent album, Turner says she hadn’t written any music “in a couple years.” NoDef talked to Turner about life and live music as a transgender woman.
