NOLA in the Ky. Derby: Revolultionary 3rd, Amoss' Mylute 5th

Fleetwood Mac rocked the Acura Stage at Saturday’s Jazz Fest, but it was one horse in Louisville that ended the night as a star.  In a thrilling running of the 139th Kentucky Derby, Orb and jockey Joel Rosario patiently waited in the end of the pack, until shooting up from outside for a solid win.

Fair Grounds Farewell: Napravnik, Amoss Among Season Leaders

After months of making the backstretch of Gentilly Boulevard their home, trainers and jockeys finally packed up their tack trunks, loaded their horses and set off toward a new destination, as the horseracing season came to a close with Saturday's Louisiana Derby. But before making way for JazzFest, the Fair Grounds tallied the points and announced the 2012-13 standings.

A scion is gone, and in true Louisiana tradition, Populist Politics figures heavily into finding the state's new standard bearer. With the retirement of Star Guitar, there's some space at the top of the thoroughbred throne, and a set of horses are set to stake their claim at Saturday's 22nd annual Louisiana Champion’s Day races at the Fair Grounds Race Course. The day of racing commences at 12:15 pm with the first of 11 races, all featuring Louisiana bred thoroughbreds, for a collective purse of $ 1.1 million.

The Fair Grounds were in full celebration mode on Thanksgiving and Black Friday, as some of the best horses went head to head for the top spot in the winner’s circle. Check out the rundown below for the Thanksgiving Handicap, Mr. Sulu Stakes and the Woodchopper, three of the most exciting races this holiday weekend.

New Orleanians Pack Fair Grounds' Thanksgiving Winner's Circle

On Thanksgiving Day, horse racing takes center stage in New Orleans. On opening day of the track's new season, the thoroughbred gods returned the favor to their gracious hosts, giving Crescent City owners and trainers victories in the day's two biggest races. During the Thanksgiving Handicap, the crowd of decadent hats and betting Y'ats saw Gantry take the lead down the stretch to capture the day's largest purse. Gantry's team flies their South Louisiana flag proudly.
