The Hidden South's Brent Walker Talks Southern Stories & Creative Ambitions

There is nothing like having a story to tell and no way to tell it. Many of us often take to social media, to our miles long “friend” list, to tell the world of our woes. While it may be true that every person has a tale to tell, many people in this country often find themselves without a platform to express it, due to a number of circumstances.

Brent Walker, the creative force behind The Hidden South, has done just that. He has taken the stories of individuals who might have never been able to tell them otherwise, and gives them that platform to stand tall from, all while allowing them to be exactly who they are. NoDef had a chance to sit down with the artist to learn a bit more about the project, as well as give Walker the chance to tell his own story.

150 Miles Denied

Louisiana’s Unsafe Abortion Act has researchers at University of California San Francisco (UCSF) scratching their heads. The law requires clinics offering abortion services to have hospital admitting privileges, which has already caused widespread closure of clinics leaving only five left in the State. Three are currently engaged in a lawsuit that could shut them down as well, including one clinic in Metairie. A UCSF study released March 4 found that the law would force Louisiana women to travel 150 miles or more to seek treatment.

Ogden Curator Sumrall Talks Jim Roche

On Friday (2.27), the Ogden Museum of Southern Art is opening “Jim Roche: Cultural Mechanic.” The new exhibition is a 46 year survey including paintings, drawings, ceramics, and sculpture from Roche’s prolific career. Curator Bradley Sumrall sat down with NoDef to answer a few questions about the show.
