Sunday Second Line: Unbreakable Men & Divine Ladies (PHOTOS)

Photos by Brandon Robert

New Orleans' Social Aide and Pleasure Clubs are undeterred after the horrific Mother's Day shooting, and Central City's Divine Ladies and Unbreakable Men led the marching Sunday for the first time since the tragedy. Photographer Brandon Robert captured the event, a joyous occasion for New Orleanians to show the world that violence has no place in the second lining tradition.

Sunday Second Line: Single Ladies and Men in Central City

French Quarter Fest is clogging the streets downtown, but all the Single Ladies and Men are set to prance on the pavement Uptown on Sunday for a second line. Whether you've been to a parade before or not, The Single Ladies and Men Social Aide and Pleasure Club and Queen Helena Thomas are set to take you on "Our First Date" through the streets of Central City, beginning at 1 p.m. Click through for the full route:

Parade Watch: Stepping Out for a Pussyfooter, Second Line By the Bayou

The Italian American marchers aren't the only ones hitting the streets this weekend. From Audbon Park to Bayou St. John, a pair of parades are set to roll out the good times. In the meantime, marchers will also be helping to say "f*ck cancer," and keep it real.

Anti-Crime March to Add Second Line Stylings

Last month's 610 Stompers appearance at an Uptown anti-crime march made things feel like Mardi Gras. This month, it's set to feel more like Easter, as The Original Pigeon Town Steppers are lined up for a special Ordinary Time appearance at the monthly procession against violence. “I didn’t want to wait until Easter to see them again,” an organizer said.

Halloween Second Line: Rescheduled Black Men of Labor Rolls Saturday

Even though Blaine Kern's Boo Krewe isn't making a march this year, the fringes of the French Quarter will not lack a parade. Thankfully, the Black Men of Labor are there to fill in the gap Saturday afternoon. The Social Aide and Pleasure Club normally marches Labor Day weekend. But Tropical Storm Lee forced the historic group off its normal trajectory. Festitivies start with a ceremony honoring the New Orleans members of the Freedom Riders outside Sweet Lorraine's (1931 St. Claude Ave.), followed by the parade down Rampart St., and onto Treme and the Seventh Ward. Look for the tradition-oriented group to have a small army of musicians in tow, ranging from the young, to the old, to the Uncle Lionel.
