Read on for Sunday's picks. Buku in ReviewInaugural NOLA Hip-Hop, Electronic Music Fest Spotlights Budding BeatsNoDef's Dan Goodman looks back at the first-ever Buku Music and Art Project, a St. Patrick's Day weekend-long party at Mardi Gras World. Within the festival, Goodman probes debates within the worlds of electronic music and hip-hop about live performance and, of course, buzz bands. Buku Fest Best Mixed Before ServingWith this weekend marking the inaugural edition of the Buku Music and Art Project, it might still be difficult for the mind to grasp at what to expect. To ease the flailing - at least on the ears - local DJ Shanook, who will have a set at the fest, put together a mix of some of the artists playing this weekend at Mardi Gras World, including Wiz Khalifa, Yelle and, since electronic music is that most meta of genres, headliner Skrillex remixing headliner Avicii. Click through to listen, and don't forget about NoDef's full Buku preview, which can be found here. Buku ReasonsCounting Down to NOLA's Newest FestThis weekend, the inaugural Buku Music and Art Project arrives in New Orleans. On March 17 and 18, Mardi Gras World on the East Bank will be transformed into a haven for electronic and hip-hop fans, as roughly two dozen luminaries of these respective scenes will grace a pair of riverside stages. Hip-Hop/Electronic Centered Buku Fest to Debut in MarchA new big ticket festival has been added to this year's calendar of all-day parties that tide us over between Fat Tuesday and the annual voyage to the Fair Grounds. Slated for March 17-18 at Mardi Gras World's Eastbank complex, the Buku Music and Art Project has booked some of the biggest national acts of the moment in hip-hop and electronic music including Wiz Khalifa, Diplo, Skrillex, Yelawolf and Big K.R.I.T. So far, 12 bands have been announced for the two-day festival. Music Playlist Series: The Sounds of Summerby Laine Kaplan-Levenson Hola Nola, and hola the long, hot summer. This week sees a top ten mix of what’s been on rotation as spring heads into summer. From underground to top 40 hip-hop, obscure electronic indulgence, old world reggae, and the necessary French remix, there's plenty of bump n grind to either keep our minds off, or better yet enjoy the brutal beast of humid heat. |
