SDT Souping Up Island Resort Now that he's stepped down as NOLA trashanova, Sidney D. Torres IV is returning to his real estate roots. Recently, he added a fixer-upper in the Bahamas to his better-smelling slate of holdings. SDT recently bought The Cove Resort on the Bahamian island of Eleuthera, and he's looking to bring the New Orleans experience - beyond the lemony fresh spray - to the 32-acre oceanfront property. NoDef Nods: In, Out, and What's NextHot and Not in 2011, and Who to Watch in 2012 In 2011, a lot of the old maxims about New Orleans' resistance to change got thrown out the window. From Freret Street to Mayor Mitch's office to the Krewe of Chewbacchus, the City showed us that changing with the times, if not desired, is at the very least inevitable and therefore necessary. Waters around us have grown and all that. To be sure, many of the old vanguards of the city will live on past this period. But there are a few who came later that didn't live up to the hype. That doesn't mean they won't be back around again. As EWE taught us, you can always come back and marry someone who makes you look good. So, without further rambling, here's a list of who's in and who's out in 2011, and what to look out for in 2012. Craw Poll: Who Should be the Next City Councillor? Earlier this week, Arnie Fielkow threw a wrench in New Orleans politics when he left early for the NBA. The at-large Councilman's departure leaves the seat open for a successor, who will be appointed instead of elected. Yesterday, Councilwoman Stacy Head told "anyone interested in this public service to provide the Council with a letter of interest and a resume." But, like the Iowa Straw Poll before us, NoDef believes in asking the public what they think before we officially ask the public what they think. SDT Sells SDT Though he only entered the waste management business after K, SDT founder Sidney D. Torres IV seemed to be very content atop trash mountain. His high-res photos, high-floss fleet of trucks, rolodex of celebs and high profile contract holdouts seemed the work of a man enjoying the fruits of garbage moguldom. That's why it's sort of surprising that he sold the company today...to Canadians! Will it be moving the chips behind the scenes like his father before him, or are the Trashmen going full time? It's still unclear, but we know he'll be retained as a consultant by Ontario-based Iesi Corp., the company's new owner. Coverage here, there and everywhere.
