Class Got Brass Winners (PHOTOS)

Photos by Ryan Hodgson-Rigsbee

Early Sunday afternoon about a dozen brass bands representing local middle and high schools assembled within sight of the statue of Satchmo's statue in Armstrong Park to compete in the Jazz & Heritage Foundation's Class Got Brass contest.  O. Perry Walker High School took top honors, winning $10k worth of instruments for five minutes' worth of showtime, a rate that would impress even Kermit Ruffins.

Tonight in the Marigny: Solstice Second Line with the Bayou Steppers

In addition to the Second Line Show Down on Saturday at Tipitina's, the Sunday-heavy parade calendar is throwing the rest of the wek some more lagniappe tonight in the Marigny. The Bayou Steppers Social Aide and Pleasure Club are set to roll out from Sound Cafe (2700 Chartres Street) at 6 p.m. for a Summer Solstice Second Line. Click through for the full route and details.

Tipitina's Hosts Friday Night Blowout for Steve Gleason

It may not have a fancy title like Gleason Gras, but Tipitina's own benefit for Steve Gleason, the former Saint who is battling ALS, is shaping up to be a huge party of its own. Tomorrow night, the legendary Uptown club will pack them in up to the bottom of Professor Longhair's chin to raise money for the Gleason Family Trust, which supports Steve and Michel Gleason directly as he undergoes treatment and lives daily with the rapidly debilitating disease.

Satchmo's Spell

Mayfield, Ruffins, & Allen on Satchmo's Legacy

In honor of Louis Armstrong's birthday, NoDef sat down with local musicians Kermit Ruffins, Irvin Mayfield and Shamarr Allen to talk about Louis Armstrong's legacy among the town's working musicians.

Today's Events: 5/4/11

May 4, the date of the first Grammy Awards (1959), The Kent State University student killings by members of Ohio’s National Guard (1970), the first Kiss concert (1976); the birthday of Audrey Hepburn (1929), Keith Haring (1958) and moonman Lance Bass (1979). It was also the date of Sherlock Holmes’ apparent death at Reichenbach Falls, Switzerland (1981). An impressive list of historic events, but nothing beats what’s on today’s NOLA plate:

Today's Events: 4/7/11

The Defender Picks (a gauche) lay down our list of suggestions each jour de la semaine, but here's our daily ‘pick of the litter,’ spotlighting a few of the day's offerings with some added detail.

Thursdays are for music, especially when it’s the first day of French Quarter Fest, and the first time that FQF starts on a Thursday. Full circle! From 3 p.m. - 7 p.m., you best be hopping between Woldenburg Park, Harrah’s, the aquarium, and Jackson Square to catch the Spirit of New Orleans (Brass Band) and all the Zydeco(sis) your little heart desires.
