Green Light for NOPD Commander Who Double-Dipped With DetailsJust as the holiday weekend grills were lighting up, Edwin Hosli's game of red light-green light appeared to come to an end on Friday. The New Orleans Police Department Commander who came under fire for his abuse of the department's paid detail system escaped criminal scrutiny was reinstated by the Department, according to a NOPD statement. In 2011, controversy swirled around Hosli, the former commander of the 8th District (French Quarter, CBD, Marigny), when he was discovered to have formed an independent business that collected money from the NOPD to process red-light camera tickets. Akein Scott's Brother, 4 More Arrested in Connection with Mother's Day Shooting (UPDATED)Akein Scott's brother was also arrested in Sunday's Mother's Day second line shooting, according to police. Speaking at a news conference where the shooting took place at the corner of N. Villere St. and Frenchmen St. in the 7th Ward, NOPD Chief Ronal Serpas said Sean Scott, 24, is also believed to have participated in the shooting. The two Scott brothers are believed to be involved in the Frenchmen and Derbigny Boys gang, Serpas said. Michael Vicknair, 35, allegedly bludgeoned Jeffrey Bonck Sr., 53, to death, officials said. Vicknair then dug a shallow grave, and buried Bonck in a wooded area of St. Bernard Parish. Family of Man Killed by Police Files Civil Rights Lawsuit Against NOPDThe family of a man killed by New Orleans Police Department officers last year following a Mid-City traffic stop filed a civil rights lawsuit in federal court this week. Earl Sipp III and Earl Sipp Jr. are claiming unspecified damages for the the death of 20-year-old Justin Sipp, who was shot early on the morning of March 1, 2012, at the corner of N. Bernadotte St. and Toulouse St. All 3 Suspects in Garden District Rape ArrestedThe teenagers who kidnapped, robbed, and sexually assaulted a woman in the Garden District on Monday are in custody, according to NOPD. After one 15-year-old boy confessed Thursday morning to his part in the brutal attack, police were able to secure arrest warrants for the other two suspects. One of the other two is a 16-year-old boy, and the other is 18-year-old Christopher Davis. |
