Magical History Tour

Ever wondered what it would be like to walk a mile in the shoes of Satchmo, Fats Domino, or Ernie K-Doe? A new interactive music map called A Closer Walk is here to help, offering curated walking tours and audiophile pilgrimage points across New Orleans.

Krewedelusion Names King, Readies Tonighit's Second Helping of Satire

Tonight's forecast is iffy on the weather front, with meteorologists calling for chance of showers. But, on the streets, things are more certain, with Carnival predictors guaranteeing plenty of satire. Rolling tonight right after Krewe du Vieux on roughly the same route (Click through for map), Krewedelusion will leave no doubt that this prediction will come true. Marching exclusively with people-powered floats, the three-year-old group of lampooners are about ready to move out of the toddler phase and start making friends with other species.

Randy Fertel's Family Lore

This week marks the release of Randy Fertel's memoir of life with his parents, The Gorilla Man and the Empress of Steak. The book casts a light on two classic New Orleans eccentrics: she, Ruth, the owner of Ruth's Chris Steak House and he, Rodney, the man who ran for mayor on the sole platform of gaining a gorilla admission to Audubon Zoo. But before the leader of the Fertel Funky Tour had a published book, he was also NOLA Defender's 1,000th follower on Twitter. Revisit the interview, in which he discusses the book, here. Then, go see Fertel speak at Octavia Books tonight.

NoDef Numbers: July 19-26

Last week, a skyscraper's low bid was less than a double shotgun, Rep. Cedric Richmond dazzled - at baseball, and, as ever, underage drinking was found at a place with "frat" in its name. Like the Paw Paw Bandit, NoDef Numbers tend to show up around the same time each week, but we never wear the same colors. Click through for an illuminated look at the facts and figures behind the week's news.

The Thousandth Follower

An Interview with Randy Fertel

NoDef's Twitter account hit the millenium mark Sunday. Since we give ourselves pats on the back most everyday, we decided to find out just who was watching what we said in 140 characters or less.
