It’s all over until February 28th next year! Ash Wednesday tends to be subdued in New Orleans, but if you do feel like getting out, the Pelicans are back in town, the Leaf is hosting world music night, and National Book Award Finalist Emily St. John is reading in the Garden District. Today in New Orleans, the Intergalactic Krewe of Chewbacchus rolls on Frenchmen Street, and the Pelicans will take on the Nets. Russell Batiste and friends will play funk at the Maple Leaf, and G-Eazy will play at the Orpheum Theater. On this day in 1835, Battle of New Orleans hero Andrew Jackson managed to survive America's first presidential assassination attempt when a deranged man fired two pistols at him in the House chambers. Today in New Orleans, NOLA Defender is heading to the Ogden Museum for their annual King Cake Walk. The Pelicans will take on the Sacramento Kings at the Smoothie King Center, and the Joy Theater will host Touché featuring BenDeLaCreme. Over at Carrollton Station, there will be Live Pub Trivia. Today in New Orleans, there’s lots of music to add a little jazz to your Monday. The George Porter Jr. Trio will hold down the Maple Leaf as always, and Alexis & The Samurai will jam at Chickie Wah Wah. The Pelicans will take on the Rockets at home, and Chuck Bryant and Josh Clark will present their podcast, Stuff You Should Know, at the Civic. Today in New Orleans, Dogfish Reading Series will present Mixed Company, and Ogden After Hours will host Alexandra Scott. Margie Perez and Muévelo will bring the music of Celia Cruz to Prime Example Jazz Club. In sports news, the Pelicans will take on the Detroit Pistons. Today in New Orleans, the Pelicans are back in the city to take on the Minnesota Timberwolves. The Dominic Minix Quartet will jam with Honey Savage and Maggie Belle Band at Gasa Gasa, and the Saenger will put on a production of Motown the Musical. Today in New Orleans, if you still haven’t managed to see Star Wars’ newest installment, you can catch it all day at the Prytania. Zeitgeist will screen a dark comedy, Moonwalkers, and the Pelicans will take on the Memphis Grizzlies. In book news, Octavia Books will present Feverborn by Karen Marie Moning. On this day in 1962, Southern University, the South’s largest HBCU, closed after the majority of students protested the expulsion of sit-in participants. Now, more to do this Monday.

Today in New Orleans, Big Sam Trio will jam at the Maple Leaf, and Chickie Wah Wah will host a happy hour with singer-songwriter John Rankin. The Pelicans are taking on the Sacramento Kings, and Howlin’ Wolf if hosting the Coast 2 Coast Live Interactive Showcase. On this day in 1995, controversial demolition began on the Rivergate, an exhibition hall at the foot of Canal, to clear space for the new Harrah’s hotel and casino. Today in New Orleans, Brian Regan will crack some jokes at the Mahalia Jackson Theater, and the Joe Krown Trio will jam as always at the Maple Leaf. Garden District Book Shop will present Petty, and the Pelicans will take on the Clippers in Los Angeles. On this day in 1812, the first steamboat made to navigate the meandering waters of the Mississippi arrived in New Orleans and was dubbed "The New Orleans" after its home port.
