Mayor Mitch Red Lights 2 City BrassMayor Mitch announced the suspensions without pay this morning of an NOPD Commander and the city's public works director due to their links to a company that was allegedly double dipping into City funds set aside for the traffic camera program. Edwin Hosli, the newly-appointed head of the NOPD district that oversees the French Quarter, CBD and part of the Marigny, and Robert Mendoza, the city's director of public works, were both suspended for a maximum of 120 days for their involvement with a highly suspect deal with that allowed a company that was headed by city brass to view the video from the traffic cameras, and make money from the deal in addition to their city paychecks, according to a statement the Mayor made this morning. Red Light Abuse Green Lights NOPD ReformIt takes a lot of work to write probing, investigative journalism, and the returns are limited to pats on the back and empty phrases about defending the glories of democracy. But, yesterday, WDSU wrote a story that earned a rare response from the halls of power. The report found the NOPD Eight District Commander was double-dipping by forming a company that got paid city money to look at video of red-light cameras. By law, a cop has to look at the video to make running a red light an official crime. Due to the NOPD's much-maligned paid detail system, Edwin Hosli's company, Anytime Solutions, was allowed to get city money for looking at the footage. Hosli runs the police district that covers the French Quarter, CBD and part of the Marigny. His side company employs what WDSU called a "who's who of the NOPD's top brass." |
