Laid-Off Times-Picayune Employees Sue Newspaper, Parent Company Over Now-Defunct Job Security Pledge

Seven former longtime employees of The Times-Picayune in New Orleans who were laid off from their jobs in the fall of 2012 during corporate owner Advance Publications’ radical restructuring of the newspaper and more than a dozen others it owns around the country have filed suit against the newspaper and Advance, alleging “unlawful employment practices.”

Election Results: BESE, Black Robe See New Blood

Kira Orange-Jones defeated incumbent Louella Givens for the local seat on the state board that makes education policy and approves new hires for state education Superintendent. Orange-Jones, the director of the New Orleans chapter of Teach for America, won the runoff election with 56.55 percent of the vote. Givens recorded 43.45 percent of the vote, according to unofficial state results. In Orleans Parish, Givens edged Jones, 51 percent to 39 percent.

The neutral grounds may not tell the tale as they usually do, but there's a trickle of state and local runoff elections to complete the unfinished business of the October primary. In the most hotly contested race, two women are squaring off for the right to represent the kids - and not get paid to do it. It's the race for the local seat on the state Board of Secondary and Elementary Education, pitting incumbent Louella Givens against challenger and local Teach for American director Kira Orange Jones.
