Today in New Orleans 11.18.12Grub out at the Po-Boy Festival on Oak, see elaborate hats parading down the avenue, and a free film series in the Marigny with DJ Soul Sister later this evening. On this day in 1993, Pearl Jam front man Eddie Vedder was arrested and booked in OPP for a drunken Decatur Street brawl in which he spat on a waiter. Now, for more Sunday happenings. Today's Events: 11.20.11Today in New Orleans, there's no whiff of bye week blues., Fringe Fest closes down (with an after p[arty at SIberia), there's the Oak Street Po-Boy Fest, opera a second line and more! In the olden days, New Jersey became the first U.S. state to ratify the Bill of Rights (we can’t believe it either, 1789), The Nuremberg Trials began (1945), ‘Cabaret’ opened on Broadway (1966), Microsoft Windows 1.0 is released (1985), Robert F. Kennedy (1925) and Joe Biden (1943) were born, Leo Tolstoy died (1910), and it’s Universal Children’s Day. So feel like a kid again with the following: Open Wide for Oak St. Po Boy FestMost of us celebrate the sanctity of the po-boy around the lunch hour at least once (twice? three times?) a week. But every year, Oak St. gives the French Bread fixture its own bash. This year's fest rolls out Sunday afternoon near the corner of Oak St. and Carrollton Ave., beginning at 10 a.m. The focus here is on the food, with more than 40 vendors hawking special fest only po-boys. Along with favorites like Boucherie, Parkway Bakery and Tracey's, some unlikely poor boy vendors - but no less recognizable N.O. names - will be on the scene like Blue Dot Donuts, Martin Wine Cellars and the Yakamein Lady. |
