Ring the Alarm: Some NOLA Firefighters Have ‘No Confidence’ in NOFD Chief McConnell

On Saturday (4.29), members of the New Orleans Fire Department (NOFD) and their families and friends picketed the NOFD Headquarters in the French Quarter to protest Chief Timothy McConnell. The demonstration follows a week of controversy for the department after it was made public that several key firefighters — including McConnell — were involved in the contentious takedown of the Battle at Liberty Place monument early Monday morning. 

NOFD Under Fire After Monument Removal

Following the take down of the Battle of Liberty Place monument early Monday morning by a team of masked movers, rumors abounded across the city and online that the New Orleans Fire Department (NOFD) was commissioned by Mayor Mitch Landrieu to remove the Confederate statue on Iberville Street. On Wednesday (4.26), New Orleans Firefighters Association President Nick Felton confirmed in a press conference that at least half a dozen firefighters were enlisted to take down the monument early Monday on Mayor Landrieu’s instructions.

Students at Eleanor McMain Secondary School unexpectedly received a day off for the Epiphany. Students and staff were evacuated, then sent him on account of a gas leak at Weezy's alma mata on Wednesday (1.06) morning.

Mayor Mitch Rolls Out 2016 Budget

On Thursday (10.14), Mayor Mitch visited the Council Chambers to unveil his budget for the 2016 fiscal year. The 593 million dollar proposal marked a 10.4 percent increase from 2015’s proposal. Common sources of civic grousing such as crime, infrastructure, and the Mayor’s feuds with Sheriff Gusman and the firefighters topped the highlight reel.
