Timber!: Downed Oak Tree Snarls Traffic on St. Charles Ave.

by Shay Sokol

UPTOWN - It was just time for one of the stately oak trees on St. Charles Ave. this morning. The giant arbor, which rested between State St. and Jefferson Ave. on the river side of the genteel thoroughfare, came down around 10 a.m. due to old age, said a worker at the scene. No property was damaged in the tumble, but the tree bent a street lamp and pole holding up cables for the streetcar, and ripped up sidewalk.

Big Game Hunter Fires First Round at MSY

A man was just heading out on African Safari this morning, but he almost bagged his first get at Armstrong Airport. Edward Deubler, 65, accidentially shot a United Airlines ticket counter employee in the leg while checking his hunting rifle. The worker's injuries were not life threatening. Deubler was charged with negligent injury. Fear spread throughout Africa's big game community, as they awaited the arrival of a man capable of hitting a target without even trying. Coverage here, here and here.

NoDef Numbers: June 29 - July 4
