THE

Defender Picks

Today in NOLA 9.14.17

Today, educate yourself about the climate change in New Orleans with a forum featuring mayoral candidates. Bono will take the stage at the SuperDome as U2 rolls into town, and the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra opens their 2017-2018 with a stirring show. The American Italian Cultural Center will screen the classic Stromboli, starring Ingrid Bergman. On this day in 1874, the Battle of Liberty Place occurred. It is considered on of the largest killings of municipal police officers in American history. Five thousand members of the White League descended on the state government offices to try to forcefully impose Democratic candidates. A coalition of black, Italian, and Union militiamen formed the municipal police force. Many men, both defending the government and rebelling against it, died. Finally, federal troops stopped the insurrection and reimposed the Republican government. Now, more to do this Thursday.

New Orleans Jazz Market Breaks Ground on Central City Location

Re-emerging as a major Central City thoroughfare, Oretha Castle Haley will soon have a jazz center in the same stretch as the Ashe Cultural Arts Center, Zeitgeist, and Casa Borrega. The New Orleans Jazz Market (1436 Oretha Castle Haley Blvd.), broke ground this morning on an $8 million endeavor, the future rehearsal space and performance venue for the New Orleans Jazz Orchestra.
