The New Orleans Loving Festival Continues This Week

Across the country, Tuesday is Loving Day. But here in New Orleans, we have a full slate of activities surrounding the celebration of the famed 1967 Supreme Court decision that banished laws against mutiracial marriages. So, the celebration is referred to as a festival. A series of film screenings and live prose focused on multiracial identity have already sprouted up around the city. But with the big day still not yet arrived, there's more on tap this week.

New Orleans Food Co-op Opening Monday, Softly

by Ben de la Cour

On Monday, the New Orleans Food Co-Op is finally scheduled to open its doors to the public and unveil its bounty of local goods (including produce!) to the world...sort of. The Grand Opening of The New Orleans Healing Center's crown jewel is not until November 12. Monday, Oct. 10, will be a soft opening and the shelves won't be fully stocked until Thursday, Oct. 13. But to many residents of the Greater Marigny-Bywater area, this will be of little consequence because they will finally.have.a.supermarket.

Today's Events: 9.26.11

Today, Jim Fitzmorris will host one of the last of his weekly playwriting workshops, Bellflower will premiere at Chalmette Movies, and Peter, Bjorn, and John will play One Eyed Jack's. Historically speaking, musical ‘West Side Story’ opened on Broadway (1957), the first televised debate took place between Nixon and Kennedy (1960), The Beatles released Abbey Road (1969), when T.S. Eliot (1888), George Gershwin (1898), and Martin Heidegger (1890) were born, and when Paul Newman died (2008). Back to the now:

First Glance: New Orleans Food Co-op

by Shay Sokol

MARIGNY - On Wednesday, NoDef popped into the first walking tour of the space that is slated to house the New Orleans Food Co-op on the corner of St. Claude and St. Roch Aves. That's the the big orange building, for those keeping score at home.  Lori Burge, the general manager, showed us the 4,200 sq. ft. retail space that will have local produce, frozen and fresh meats, dairy, a deli, and a bulk department with coffee, herbs, beans and grains.
