Essence Fest Planner: Thursday, July 3

The 20th Edition of the Essence Music Festival kicks off Thursday (July 3) with massive sets from Nas and Trey Songz at the Superdome. After the dome unloads for the evening, slide into Independence Day with parties at Harrah's, Cafe Istanbul and more. Here's the highlights of today's schedule:

Hip-Hop Heavies at BUKU 2014

The festival market is a fast-moving, rapidly expanding industry stacked with line-ups typically more representative of a slightly subversive college kid's turntable during their fledgeling years of undergrad; milk crates filled with records bearing the names of indie rock bands more than conscientious or genre-bending hip-hop. What the early announcements of festivals this year have taught us is that there's a shift in reverence for the latter genre, making it a main contender for heavy-hitting headliner or must-see show.

BUKU Fest Breaks Down Daily Lineups

Mardi Gras will be over when the horses ride down Bourbon on March 4, but Mardi Gras World will still have a big show in front of it. On March 21-22, the 2014 edition of the Buku Music and Art Project is set to stage a previously announced lineup that includes Nas, The Flaming Lips, Ellie Goulding and others. On Wednesday, the fest spotlighting music at the nexus of EDM, hip-hop and indie rock released their day-by-day lineup. Find out what acts are playing what day:

BUKU 2014 Adds Sleigh Bells, Nas to Lineup

BUKU Music + Art Project has expanded their lineup, bulking out their EDM acts to include hip hop from Nas and Chance the Rapper. Other additions include Sleigh Bells, Carnage, GRiZ, Clockwork, Classixx (LIVE), Treasure Fingers, Young & Sick, and indie dance favorite Dan Deacon. Click through for the full lineup, and purchase tickets here.

Voodoo Sunday: Jack White, Nas, Skrillex to Play Today

It's the last day of Voodoo, and there's a little something for everyone between the five stages at the festival. Rock out with Jack White, bump your head to some electronic music, get real with Nas, or enjoy The New Orleans Bingo Show's interactive blend of cabaret, rock, and traditional New Orleans music. Read on for Sunday's picks.

Voodoo Fest Adds 20 More Artists, Including Nas, Releases Complete Schedule

With fall around the corner, the Voodoo Music Experience is firming up their lineup. Today, the big Halloween weekend show in City Park added 20 more names to this year's roster, and released the complete schedule of performances. The big headliner of the late additions is Nas. Fresh off the release of his latest album Life is Good over the summer, the Queens-born rapper is more into reflection than feuds these days. Also joining the roster are prog-leaning rockers Coheed and Cambria and the soul-worshipping Vintage Trouble. There's locals, too!

Hola Nola: XXXVIII

Last Licks for Lyricists

Hola Nola, and hola the slew of year-end-music roundups that consume each month of December and distract from the albums that have yet to surface before the ball drops.
