Today in NOLA: 8.17.14

Let the good times roll! The first-ever New Orleans Sushi Fest rolls into Mardi Gras World this afternoon, with live entertainment, traditional crafts, Miss Linda the Ya-Ka-Mein Lady, wrestlers wearing blow-up sumo suits, and oh yes, sushi. The Ashé Cultural Arts Center celebrates another cultural tradition as Mardi Gras Indian elders gather to give awards and share oral histories. Details today:

Street Food Vendors Compete for Bragging Rights at First Vendy Awards

In a town known for its sultry climate, propensity for outdoor drinking, and a myriad of festivals, a progression toward a mobile restaurant culture seems all but inevitable. However, the implementation of food trucks has been anything but simple in the Crescent City. Nevertheless, on Wednesday night at 7 p.m., the Vendy Awards will celebrate the best in New Orleans’s ever-emerging street food scene at the French Market.

NoDef Hosts Public King Cake Quest at the Ogden

It’s called Fat Tuesday for a reason. Mardi Gras revelers do their fair share of imbibing, but New Orleanians don’t need an excuse to drink. The true spirit of the season is in the food, and there’s no better way to celebrate than a king cake party. NOLA Defender is taking another King Cake Quest this year to find the best Carnival confection in town, and we’re inviting you to the Ogden Museum of Southern Art to help us pick the winners.

NoDef Reviews All of the Food at Voodoo Fest

Any seasoned New Orleanian can tell you that Fests are much more than just a big concert, There is a scene, crafts, art, and, of course, food! (And, we do like our food in the City of Seams.) The folks at Voodoo allowed our intrepid NoDef Taste Team accompanied by New Movement’s Chris Trew to taste ALL the food at their Fest. Once again, NoDef eats so that you don’t have to.

Street Fare Derby Brings Food Trucks Out of the Late-Night Haze

Over the past year, our love for the mobile eats has only grown, and plenty of food trucks have sprouted up to satiate. Some of the vanguards of this scene will be under the bright lights at the Fair Grounds for the inaugural Street Fare Derby Saturday.

Bourdain's No Reservations: SoLA Episode LiveBlogged

Tonight, food adventurer, author, and TV personality, Anthony Bourdain, comes to Lousiana. (Well, actually, it happened a few months ago. Y'all might remember the Treme Effect when Bourdain popped up all over the place: at yo' mama's, with Miss Linda, chatting with Donald Link? Well, that episode is airing now.) And NoDef is here to liveblofg the action for you.
