Maple Street Trades College Bar for Japanese Bistreaux

By the time college is back in session, Maple Street will likely have a new Asian food option come the fall. Kakkoi Japanese Bistreaux received approval to serve booze from the City Council, setting up a late August opening date. The restaurant - whose name means "awesome" or "cool" in Japanese - is located  in the former location of Doors Bar, which was one of a few college bars in the area that caught the eye of city enforcers for underage drinking.

Drew Brees Sways City Council on Uptown Jimmy John's

by Mary-Devon Dupuy

Patience for keeping the Drew Brees in contract purgatory is wearing thin, so the Breesus made an appearance before his many disciples at City Hall today to try to hold everyone over with a promise of freaky fast sandwiches. Brees, who owns the Jimmy John's franchise in the New Orleans area, spoke on behalf of creating an Uptown location of the Midwest-based sandwich chain before the City Council, then saw his desired zoning change pass the legislative body's freshly reassembled membership unanimously. The move clears the way for Jimmy John’s to replace what was previously a cosmetic retail store at 7621 Maple St.

Welcome Back: Tulane Students Robbed on Eve of Fall Semester

Fall classes began with a rude welcome for some Tulane students, as at least two attendees of the Uptown university were robbed at gunpoint Friday night. Back-to-back robberies occurred around 2:00am on Lowerline Street, just across Broadway from campus.

Master-ing the King Cake on Maple St.

by Shay Sokol

"Look at that," the baker says as he pinches the King Cake, still steaming from the oven. There are only a few Master Pastry Chefs and another handful of Master Bakers in this country. Even fewer people are both. All rolled up in one, meet Ziggy Cichowski, Poland's gift to New Orleans. Happily slaving away in the open kitchen in the nine-month-old Maple St. Patisserie, he makes small batches of crossaints, cookies, danishes and loads of other baked goods. The quick turnover allows him to churn out one fresh batch after another. During Carnival, he's added King Cakes to the slate.
