Sea Cows Stop FerryDevelopers recently paused construction on a ferry that was slated to be up and running in time for JazzFest. The St. Tammany faithful will have to wait til they get to the Fair Grounds to compare BayouWear, as the high speed boat was held up by one of the slowest creatures with which it will have to share Lake Pontchartrain. The Army of Corps of Engineers was forced to delay construction due to special precautions that ensure the habitat of the manatee. The endangered marine mammals are known to feed on sea grass in the shallow waters of a drainage canal where the ferry's developer wants to dredge. As a result, Pontchartrain Express will have to get special permits. |
