Eco-Conscious Cocktails (Recipes)

With Earth Day just hours away, everyone should raise a glass in toast to Mother Gaia! NoDef's pals at Bombay Sapphire offered up a few suggestions for environmentally-minded libations ahead of Saturday's celebration. The team called upon some of the top cocktail creators from across the country to share zero-waste cocktails to sip the sustainability lifestyle.

Passing Time at the Maple Leaf

Gentle reader, it is said that Time keeps everything from happening all at once. Apart from that, I find it a nuisance. My free ride to Uptown came well before Rebirth Brass Band was to play. And I was bound to sit upon a barstool and wait. Day bled out to night as the patrons traded faces, and I struggled to remain coherent in a bar that alters by hours as a year through the seasons. Come, my friends, and keep the watch with me at The Maple Leaf Bar.

Tales of Tales (Photos)

By Dr. Bill Copen

By Thursday (7.16), the glasses at Tales of the Cocktail 2015 were most definitely half-full. Experts like Dave Wondrich and Charlotte Voisey taught and judged. Brand ambassadors squared off. And the setting being New Orleans, of course a brass band played. Click on through to read about all the action and check out some photos.

Tales of the Camera

Gustings Takes Manhattan

On September 17, the storied James Beard House in New York City is going to get a taste of Louisiana—literally. The folks at Broussard’s are packing up shop, heading to the Big Apple, and serving up some SoLa fare at the culinary mecca. Given the importance of drink to NOLA’s culture, bartender and iconic curmudgeon Paul Gustings will be leading the charge.

Chilling Effects (Cocktail Recipes)

A few minutes in the sauna that is all of NOLA outdoors right now will confirm that summer has officially begun. The best way to beat the heat is lots of water, but a refreshing adult beverage is also pretty helpful. NoDef’s friends at Emeril’s were kind enough to share a few of their favorite cocktails for y’all to test out at home. Click on through for recipes.

Crossing The Parish Line: Old Arabi Bar

Gentle reader, apropos of our continued oppression beneath the iron boot of the smoking ban, let us take a little trip. Nearby places guard a history of defiance against the tyranny of the Dread Council. And so in a time-honored tradition of New Orleans, let us traverse the Industrial Canal to avoid persecution. We are bound for The Parish, gentles, and a storied old neighborhood for a drink and a smoke at The Old Arabi Bar.

Homedale Inn Provides Shelter from the Storms in Lakeview

Gentle reader, I wandered alone through the purple moor of Lakeview. Memorial Day had been swallowed up in a dense and silent gloom. A thunderstorm the size of Alabama hurtled toward the city from Texas and I needed a place to hole up. Friends, entering into an ancient neighborhood bar for the first time can be an unsettling business – being a strange face out of the storm. But I was in need of shelter, and by lucky chance, at the door of the Homedale Inn.

Hot or Not

Tales of the Toddy 2014 in Photos

On Thursday (12.18) night, hundreds of bartenders, chefs, and drinkers gathered at House of Blues for the annual Tales of the Toddy cocktail competion. The toddies were served both hot and cold, and the two man bartending teams were decked out in their finest costumes. Treo, Sylvain, and Barrel Proof's staff were all repreented amongst the winners. NoDef's Dr. Bill Copen was on hand to capture the action.

NoDef's Intrepid Columnist Ventures to Lucky Pierre's on Bourbon

Gentle reader, I have come to Bourbon Street! At the ironic insistence of Your Cousin Dimitri of WWOZ fame, I have come. And now that I am here, I take it as a public service to enter into the maw and go down into the belly so that you, gentle reader, might remain unsullied and yet still know.
