Today in New Orleans: 2.15.14

Krewe du Vieux kicks off in the Marigny tonight with this year’s theme “Where the Vile Things Are.” The Walkmen are playing a benefit show at One Eyed Jacks, and there is wiener dog racing at the Fair Grounds. On this day in 1957, influential Civil Rights group the Southern Christian Leadership was founded. Now, more to do this Saturday.

Even though Krewe du Vieux is coming early, there will still be plenty of parade action to keep you satisfied. Immediately following the ass-drawn floats and brass bands of the satirical parade will be Episode four of krewedelusion. With people-pulled floats and even more satire, the fledgling group will take to the streets once again in hopes of proving even further that New Orleans is the center of the universe.

Photos and Swag from the 2012 Editions of Krewe du Vieux and Krewedelusion

MARIGNY --  2012 is a ripened, juicy satsuma of satire, so we figured Krewe du Vieux's Crimes Against Nature edition would be taking an irreverent tip of the spear to the Occupy movement, Mayor Mitch and the Apocalypse.

Krewedelusion Names King, Readies Tonighit's Second Helping of Satire

Tonight's forecast is iffy on the weather front, with meteorologists calling for chance of showers. But, on the streets, things are more certain, with Carnival predictors guaranteeing plenty of satire. Rolling tonight right after Krewe du Vieux on roughly the same route (Click through for map), Krewedelusion will leave no doubt that this prediction will come true. Marching exclusively with people-powered floats, the three-year-old group of lampooners are about ready to move out of the toddler phase and start making friends with other species.

Today: Mardi Gras Parade Season is Off to the Racy

Before that, the Hagar's House Costume Carnival rolls into Mid-City, and The Boat Show wraps up at the Superdome. On this day in Louisiana history, Gov. Jimmie Davis recorded "You Are My Sunshine" for the Decca label (1940). Don't let them take yours away today. Check these out:

Muu Muu Platter

Before the dynastic debauchery that is Krewe du Vieux takes it to the streets tonight, the upstart KreweDelusion will make its sophomore march out front. With a DIY streak and penchant for the irreverent, the nascent krewe looks to pave a new path through Mardi Gras. Hmm...If it ain't broke...In any case, the subDelusion Krewe de MuuMuu is reportedly finished with their debut set of homemade throws. Thanks to the wonders of Facebook, they're available for all to see right here.
