Krampus Gras

NOLA Fetes Demon Who Visits the Night Before St. Nick

Krampus is the stuff of nightmares. His name is derived from the German word Krampen, or to claw, and the night before Nikolaustag (Saint Nick’s Day) the beast creeps into town and beats the children into being nice. Of course, New Orleans will be feting this anti-hero with a mini-fest on December 5.

Today in NOLA: 12.5.2014

Lots of music on tap in New Orleans tonight with acts by Nancy Whang, former member of James Murphy’s project LCD Soundsystem, local Swedish-born guitarist Anders Osborne, and a Black Sabbath cover band. Krampus, the opposite of Santa, gets dreamed up at Siberia, and the art movement Pancakes and Booze howls at the Wolf. Back in 1981, The Rolling Stones played a concert at the Superdome. Now, more of what’s in store for this Friday.

Today in New Orleans 12.7.13

Tonight on the West Bank, the Algiers community is lighting up a bonfire at the Point to guide Santa back. On St. Claude, Krampus Gras is making way for St. Nick's evil twin, Krampus. Nick Kroll is performing at the Civic, with legendary singer-songwriter Bonnie Raitt at the Saenger. On this day in 1851, Archbishop Blenk blessed what is now St. Louis Cathedral. Now, more to do this Saturday.

Krampus Gras Steps Out for Santa's Evil Twin

Parents have Celebration in the Oaks and other family-friendly holiday parties, but this weekend's Krampus Gras celebration on St. Claude Ave. offers adults a scarier opportunity for costumes and revelry.
