Family of Unarmed Man Killed by Police Sues City, NOPD

For the second time in a week, the New Orleans Police Department and the City are facing a federal lawsuit over the killing of a citizen by a police officer. The family of Wendell Allen, who was killed by an officer while standing unarmed and shirtless in his mother's Gentilly home on March 7, 2012, filed a federal civil rights lawsuit this week against the NOPD, the City and the officer who shot the 20-year-old.

NOPD Officer Charged with Manslaughter in Shooting Death of Unarmed Man

The New Orleans police officer that allegedly shot and killed an unarmed man in Gentilly during a March incident was indicted Thursday. Joshua Colclough was charged with manslaughter by the Orleans Parish DA in the killing of Wendell Allen in his home on March 7. He reportedly turned himself in Friday.

The NOPD wrapped up its investigation into the March killing by police of Wendell Allen, and handed over the report to the Orleans Parish District Attorney’s Office at 4:00pm this afternoon. Members of the Force Investigation Team of the Public Integrity Bureau, which includes 2 FBI agents, the Independent Police Monitor, and detectives of NOPD’s Homicide division worked together to conduct the investigation, as is new protocol when a police-involved shooting occurs.
