Defender Picks

Today in NOLA 8.23.17

Looking to ball out on a budget? Not a problem, as there are some amazing free events around town today. Bar Redux hosts an outdoor screening of the black comedy Brit flick Trainspotting, while The New Movement founders return for their weekly improv show. Get down without breaking the bank at One Eyed Jacks at the burlesque dance party, or shape up at the Jazz Museum without spending a dime. On this judge in 2002, a three-judge court appeals panel unanimously rejected Edwin Edwards appeal on convictions. Now, more to do this Wednesday.

One Night Only: NoDef and Humor in the Same Place

Normally, the masses stand apart from improv comedy, and pass judgement by way of room-filling guffaws, or uncomfortable silence. Tonight, however, they're invited into the fold, as the NOLA wing of Austin's The New Movement troupe holds Improv Zero, which gives the people that normally sit passively a taste for how hard they are to please. The night starts with an improv class, and progresses into performance. Since we have experience being a tough crowd, we figured we'd cash in some karma and participate ourselves this week. For the night-ending "Megaphone" show at the Marigny's Shadowbox Theatre, NoDef Editor B.E. Mintz will provide the fodder for the comedic riffin' of the Movement's experienced improv artists. The classes, which are open to the public, start at  7 p.m., while the improv show featuring NoDef starts at 9 p.m. The show is $5, and classes are free.
