Fish Frys Abound As Lent Begins



For many locals, the 40 days following Mardi Gras is a time to take a break from the booze. However, for faithful Catholics, the period is a time of literal fast punctuated by fish on Fridays. For all New Orleanians, lent is a great time eat some tasty seafood.


Meter Metrics


Despite strong protests from service industry workers, the much hyped changes in parking policies went into effect on Monday (1.11). Meter hours were increased downtown, ticket prices are slated to rise, and parking enforcement  was increased.


Bibliophiles' Delight


Here, at NoDef, we are big fans of the digital revolution, but we still hold print and pulp in high regard. So, there was some excitement in our offices when the New Orleans Public Library announced expanded hours this week.


Mailbag: Meter Made--FQ Workers Respond to Parking Compromise


Mayor Mitch’s plan to make public parking downtown more expensive was met with outrage from French Quarter service industry types. So, a compromise was offered. In response, three leaders of the opposition, Nick Detrich, Mark Schettler, and Chris Lane penned an open letter calling for more attention to root issues such as public transit.


Winter Break


City Hall ate up a lot of ink last week. However, the powers-that-be promise a quieter time ahead with the holidays bringing a slew of schedule changes. Today, the City of New Orleans announced their Christmas closures.
