The results of NoDef's King Cake Walk are in! For the second year in a row, Bittersweet Confections has landed the win for their vibrantly sugared cake filled with rich chocolate. But, Bittersweet was only one of the local bakeries represented in the competition, all of whom brought their best game to the challenge. The barren platters at the event's end provided evidence that there are no loosers in the world of cake.

King Cakes are kind of a big deal in New Orleans. The delicious treat is almost synonymous with Mardi Gras itself, and in NOLA perhaps no other bakery is as famous as Haydel’s. With Mardi Gras season gearing up the bakery has gone into overdrive but Nodef managed to sneak away Ryan Haydel, third generation baker and co-owner, from the kitchen just long enough to find out what it’s like to be a King Cake baker.

After several years of sending writers out to sample the Crescent City's many takes on King Cake, NoDef opted this year to let the people weigh in. On Jan. 24, hundreds of guests piled into the Ogden Museum of Southern Art's weekly After Hours event to help us choose the most outstanding oval in NoDef's first public King Cake Quest.

A New Orleans fixture for over 52 years and the holder of the Guiness record for world’s largest King Cake, there is no denying that Haydel’s Bakery knows its way around the ringed dessert. As our Quest has shown over the past week, many upstarts are kneading their way into the world of the King Cake. But, as ever in this town – and especially during Carnival – it's important to remember from whence we came.
