Commencement Schedules for NOLA's Universities

For some portions of the City, this time of year is not Fest Season, but Commencement Season. Caps and gowns have already taken flight at Dillard and SUNO, but Tulane, Loyola, UNO, and Xavier will all be distributing sheepskins in the days ahead. With dozens of events, it’s easy to be confused. NoDef has the full schedules for the local schools below.

Graduation Party Stickup

Graduation is often accompanied by grousing about money spent and debts incurred. The dough was a bit more poignant at a graduation party by UNO on Saturday (5.16) morning. Authorities say that one graduation fete was the scene of a stickup.

Today in NOLA: 5.14.15

Even if you don’t have a paramour, you can find Paramore at the Saenger. It’s graduation day for LSUHC. One Eyed Jack’s is going back in time. Local filmmakers have their night and the rest of us can check out some free music in Armstrong Park. On this day in 1845, Louisiana’s first free public school opened. Now, more Thursday happenings.

NOPD Graduates First New Recruits in 2 Years

Amid all the reforming and runnin' down bad guys, the NOPD took a little time for pomp and circumstance today.  The New Orleans Police Department graduated its first academy class since 2010 - marking the first batch of new recruits under Chief Ronal Serpas that had to have at least 60 hours of college credits, or the equivalent of 2 years of full service in the military.  The 28-person class underwent 23 weeks of training - one more than previous classes. The extra week was due to new curriculum, as requested by the Department of Justice.
