It's a Darn God ShameThe Mother-in-Law Lounge Closes, For Real This TimeTREME - Ernie K-Doe said, “After I’m gone, there will be no other." The same can be said about the bar that was named for his hit single, “Mother-In-Law.”
The Lounge's doors have been shut since March, when a car crashed into the front of the building for the sixth time in the mural-heavy N. Claiborne Ave. landmark's 16-year history. Despite the plywood covering the front door, current owner Betty Fox told NoDef she kept the building open -- until this weekend. Emporer's Clothes, On Sale NowWhat was once a safehouse for downtown cultural progenitors of all stripes (and feathers) is now marked by a piece of plywood covering the entrance. The remnants of the sixth time a car crashed into the sub-interstate building on N. Claiborne Avenue, the nailed-shut passageway is also a mark of no return. The Ernie K-Doe Mother-in-Law Lounge holds what just might be its actual swansong this weekend. |
