Aural Focus: Frenchmen Photo Exhibitions Explore Early Rolling Stone, InstrumentHead

Being in the moment of a concert creates a memory, but pictures make a legend. A complementary pairing of photography shows is slated to hit two galleries on Frenchmen St. as Jazz Fest opens this weekend. These exhibitions are generations apart, but are intrinsically connected with a shared musical soul.

Hangout Fest 2013 Lineup: NOLA Bands Bama Bound

Local bands are used to playing along the murky Mississippi, but a handful them are headed to the bluer side of the coast for the fourth edition of Hangout Fest. The Revivalists, Galactic, Anders Osborne, and Colin Lake are headed to Gulf Shores, Alabama, May 17-May 19. The fest is only a short drive away, and includes headliners Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Kings of Leon, and Stevie Wonder. Click for the full lineup.

Today in New Orleans 3.23.13

Whole hogs at City Park, an Easter egg hunt in Algiers, theatre performances from the CAC to Gentilly, live music, and more are happening today in the Big Easy. On this day in 1957, Fats Domino’s “I’m Walkin’” hit number one on the Billboard Chart. Now, more to do this Saturday.

Gigging and Giving: Toussaint, Irma Thomas, Galactic Play Weekend Benefits for Musicians

New Orleans has produced some of the world’s greatest giggers, but living show-to-show is a challenge for musicians with health problems, and for those who have yet to make it home after the Flood. Tomorrow night, Tipitina’s and the Howlin’ Wolf will be full of talents trying to help bring the Houseman home, and get Warmdaddy back on his feet. Saxophonist Wessell “Warmdaddy” Anderson and Theryl “Houseman” Declouet have some famous friends that will perform, including Allan Toussaint, Irma Thomas, Galactic, The Revivalists, and many, many more.

Gypsyphonic Remixes Mardi Gras

Galactic's Ben Ellman and DJ Quickie Mart built up a quick following after two servings of Balkan Bounce in their side project Gypsyphonic Disko. For their next project, the pair decided to come back home for Carnival, using nostalgic Mardi Gras classics as a base for a bounce remix.

Simon Bowl: Bands Representing Treme, The Wire Battle at Tip's This Weekend

Better stock up on Honey Nut Cheerios, New Orleans, because Omar is coming. Williams, who played Omar Little on The Wire. In this corner are hometown favorites Galactic and the Stooges Brass Band, and in this corner, from Baltimore and Washington, D.C., are Lafayette Gilchrist & The New Volcanoes and The Backyard Band, which features Anwan Glover, better known to fans of The Wire as Slim Charles.

Mudbug Mayhem: Crawfest, Pinch-a-Palooza Boil Over New Orleans Schedules This Weekend

by Brad Rhines

If you can’t get an invitation to your neighbor’s crawfish boil this weekend, fret not. Even if the guy next door is being selfish with his shellfish, two local fests promise a bounty of mudbugs this weekend and both events feature plenty of great live music and local entertainment.  Uptown, Tulane’s annual Crawfest promises plenty of fun in the sun for the coed crowd, while out in Bucktown the seafood stalwarts at Deanie’s host Pinch-A-Palooza, a street party for all ages.
