Today in New Orleans 1.18.13There is no shortage of fun tonight, with Offbeat’s Best of the Beat at Generations Hall, the Radiators at Tip’s, comedy all over the city, and more. On this day in 1962, Southern University, the South’s largest HBCU, closed after the majority of students protested the expulsion of sit-in participants. Now, more to do this Friday. Today in New Orleans: 8.24.12Today, come out and make more SEC history at the Crescent City Kickoff Party, check out the “Sexy Summer Show,” along with some boxing on Freret Street. or get funky with Kirk Joseph at Tip's On this day in Louisiana history, a U.S. Appelate Court ruled against segregation for Louisiana State University’s undergraduate classes (1955). Now for all of today's nitty-gritty: Today's Events: 7.22.11July 22, when Gen. Moses Cleaveland founded The city of Cleveland (1796), when Wiley Post became the first person to fly solo around the world, traveling 15,596 miles in one week (1933), when The Senate rejected President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s proposal to add more justices to the Supreme Court (1937), when Emma Lazarus (1849), Oscar De La Renta (1932), Tom Robbins (1936), and Funkadelic George Clinton (1941) were born, when Carl Sandburg died (1967). So let your mothership land at these spots: Freret Friday Night Fights Get 'Sexy'Freret Street Boxing Gym likes their Uptown neighborhood so much, they decided to put a ring on it. The ever-popular Friday Night Fights returns for the first time since early May with the “Sexy Summer Edition,” set to take place this Friday, July 22, at 7 p.m. Suckerpunch: Friday Night Fights Won't Provide Alcoholby Christilisa Gilmore After a hiatus from the bright lights of Freret St., Friday Night Fights is back in full swing this week for an April Fools Day edition of the Uptown boxing throwdown. But, this week, expect a major change from fight nights in the past. The fight night will no longer offer complimentary booze with the bouts. Or any booze for that matter. Freret St. Boxing Gym tells NoDef that since they do not have a liquor license, and cover charge of the door amounted to a charge for the gifts the kegs bequeathed, they had to throw in the towel. The festivities will be transformed into a huge tailgate party, so grills and alcohol are still welcome. Towel Thrown in Againby Shay Sokol Yet again, tonight's Friday Night Fights on Freret St. has again been postponed due to cold weather. But this time, it’s really put off… ‘til after Mardis Gras. The question is: will any of us have the stamina by then? The fight was going to be a “winter wonderland show,” complete with a Frosty the Snowman. Sorry Frosty, but we hope you’ll melt before Mardis Gras begins. Fight Night Price HikeBy Shay Shokol UPDATED: The Fights have been moved to Feb 11 on account of inclement weather (aka "the misery outside.") It’s that time of month again. The undeniable good time known as Friday Night Fight, hosted by the Freret St. Boxing Gym, will be held tomorrow night at 4510 Freret St. But instead of paying $15 at the door to join the pit of people pumping beer kegs and begging for blood, this time you’ll have to cough up $20. You may still get a ticket for $15 in advance by going to the gym and talking to Mike, or calling the host Kevin Jambon at 504.512.4542. Father Said Knock You Out?Boxing Gym Regular Looking for a Fight Night ShotAmong the drag queens, rappers and Rage Against the Machine cover band, one faithful boxing gym fixture might be noticeably sidelined at tonight's edition of Friday Night Fights on Freret St. |
