Today's Events: 3.11.12Today, a second line keeps it real in Mid-City and the 7th Ward, Foburg wraps up, Generations Hall sees a Fete de la Musique and an artist talks about his work at the Ogden. On this day, Louisiana's last French governor Pierre de Laussat arrived to take the reins just in time for Napoleon to decide he wanted to sell this land, (1803) and it's the birthday of Cajun music legend Amede Ardoin (1898), and New Orleans drummer Terrence Higgins (1970). Now back to today: Today's Events: 3.10.12Today, celebs storm the CBD for A Night to Make it Right, the Italian American Marching Club makes their annual St. Joseph's Day trek through the Quarter, Ira Glass appears in the flesh at Tulane and Foburg continues into the night. On this day, legendary La. music producer Huey P. Meaux was born (1929) and Branford Marsalis was named music director of The Tonight Show (1992). Today's Events: 3.9.12Today, Streetcar Season opens at the NOMA Sculpture Garden, Foburg Fest kicks off, Built to Spill rips into One Eyed Jack's and Papa Mali brings together some of New Orleans' finest musicians. On this day, Pierre Lafitte died near Creve Coeur, Missouri - as one account had it (1844), and we wish a very happy birthday to Lloyd Price. Prove you've got Personality with these: Foburg's Expanding Footprint2012 Edition of Pre-SXSW Alt Music Fest Features More Bands, Comedy and FilmWhile year-round, New Orleans may not be a top destination for indie rock, once a year the city's fortuitous proximity to the nation's largest alternative music festival has many of the best up-and-coming bands in the country passing through on their way to South By Southwest in Austin, TX. Foburg Update: Toro Y Moi CancelledAccording to the PR team of Chazwick Bundick (aka Toro Y Moi) the much anticipated performance at Saturn Bar is officially (and unfortunately) canceled. Chaz has lost his voice, and is super bummed that he won’t be playing his Foburg stint; Sun Airway, Cloud Nothings, Cults, and Small Black (in that order) will still Chill Wave it out on the Saturn stage. You know what they say, voices are for saving (for SXSW). 'Bones' Brigade: Das Racist and Katey Red hit Foburgby Dan Goodman Tonight at Foburg Fest, the angular rockers that warmed up last night's crowd will lay down their arms to make way for some bawdy beats. Winter Circle Productions presents an event titled “Bones” at the Maison on Frenchmen St., featuring the infamous New York rap group Das Racist in the headlining spot. The duo, comprised of Victor Vazquez and Himanshu Suri, first blew up with their hit spoof on a restaurant that featured references to Pizza Hut and Taco Bell. Ra Ra RiotHola Nola: A Celebrity Mixtape Series- Vol VIIIHola Nola- and hola Syracuse Stringin’, Indie pop singin’ Ra Ra Riot. These folks are off and running after a demo, four EPS, and two hit full lengths, numerous smash singles (not to mention honorable remixes of such tunes, aka Passion Pit’s ‘Ghost Under Rocks’ edit) feature film soundtrack fame, oh, and a country-wide tour. Lucky for us, the next stop is Foburg, TONIGHT. The Hood InternetHola Nola: A Celebrity Mixtape Series- Vol VIHola Nola- and Hola Chi-town mashup duo ‘Steve Sleeve’ Reidell Aaron Brink, aka The Hood Internet. With close to 200 remixes to their name, the pair have established a name for themselves. Foburg: Day 3Foburg finished off with a bang! Downstairs at The Maison, we saw NOLA's own, Peg Rousel, play. Her one woman act was straight from the Joni Mitchell playbook. One woman with a miked acoustic guitar, belting out soulful songs about love lost. Hell, she even had the requisite set list safety pinned to her mic stand. Rousel was feeling ill, but her sore throat only enhanced the sound, adding a Sachmo-esque roughness to her voice. (Sorry, Peg, let's call it a Billy Holiday-esque.) We particularly enjoyed Turning which like many of her songs evoked Cash covering NIN's Hurt. Dorkrock Interpolates your face at the FoburgThe evening began well enough, which is to say that I found the bar in the press area, schmoozed a bit, and then, properly lubricated set out to hear some music. |
