Today in New Orleans 4.4.14

The Mahalia Jackson Theatre hosts a night of opera that tells a tragic love story, and Trinity Episcopal Church will have a non-stop, 29-hour, Baroque inspired set of performances. NOLA’s growing puppetry scene can enjoy the first weekend of the International Puppet Festival. On this day in 1764, the first official announcement in d'Abadie's journal of Acadians arrival in Louisiana. Now, more to do this Friday. 

Reel Deal: Film-O-Rama Releases Schedule

The Prytania Theatre (5339 Prytania St.) is eschewing box office hits for an entire week for Film-O-Rama. The Prytania and the New Orleans Film Society are partnered for the fifth year in a row, and they are screening classics the entire week of April 4-10. Today, Irish sensations The Priests belt Loyola into the next century, Roberta Brandes Gratz talks smaller cities and Bubbamania touches down in New Orleans. On this day in history, Ponchartrain Railroad opened, first west of Alleghenies (1831), early jazz clarinet great Jimmie Noone was born (1895) and New York Dolls guitarist Johnny Thunders was found dead in his French Quarter hotel room (1991).
