Fair Grounds Farewell: Napravnik, Amoss Among Season Leaders
After months of making the backstretch of Gentilly Boulevard their home, trainers and jockeys finally packed up their tack trunks, loaded their horses and set off toward a new destination, as the horseracing season came to a close with Saturday's Louisiana Derby. But before making way for JazzFest, the Fair Grounds tallied the points and announced the 2012-13 standings.
Revolutionary's Road: Louisiana Derby Favorite Likely to Run for the Roses After Win
Under blue skies and surrounded by a festival, the favorite prevailed Saturday at the Fair Grounds' main event. After stalking the leaders early, Revolutionary made a move from the outside on the final turn, and surged into the lead. When it was over, the WinStar Farm horse ended up a neck in front of second-place finisher Mylute. The win was good for a qualifying spot in the Kentucky Derby on May 4.

Bigantlers Scores Surprise Fair Grounds Win, Huge Payout
Bigantlers surprised the crowd and perhaps even his trainer on Sunday as he raced past the finish line for the win in the second race of the day. His victory garnered $228.80 for a $2.00 wager, the largest payout thus far in the 2012-2013 racing season, and an even larger payout than last year's surprise Louisiana Derby champion Hero of Order.
Striped for Competition
Zebras, Ostriches, Zedonks Set to Streak Across Fair Grounds Race Course Saturday
It may have been a rainy week at the track, but on Saturday night storm clouds part just in time for a night of exotic twilight racing. After 6 pm, Louisiana’s finest thoroughbreds step aside to make way for their equus cousins and a flock of flightless birds. A select group of jockeys will take to the gate with a zebra, a zedonk (hybrid between a donkey and a zebra) and an ostrich for a playful night of racing.
Heavy on Themister Gets La. Bragging Rights at Fair Grounds
Though there were rumblings about the birth of a new Fair Grounds rivalry, it wasn't in the cards for Populist Politics and Get in Da House at the Fair Grounds on Saturday. But, perhaps unsurprisingly, the seat atop the throne of Louisiana thoroughbreds belongs to a horse ridden by one of the Gentilly track's most successful jockeys. Rosie Napravnik guided Heavy on Themister to victory in the $150,000 Louisiana Champions Day Classic.
With 3-Time Champion Retired, La. Championship Up for Grabs at Fair Grounds
by Emma Boyce
A scion is gone, and in true Louisiana tradition, Populist Politics figures heavily into finding the state's new standard bearer. With the retirement of Star Guitar, there's some space at the top of the thoroughbred throne, and a set of horses are set to stake their claim at Saturday's 22nd annual Louisiana Champion’s Day races at the Fair Grounds Race Course. The day of racing commences at 12:15 pm with the first of 11 races, all featuring Louisiana bred thoroughbreds, for a collective purse of $ 1.1 million.
