Etta James' New Orleans Cut

Word is quickly making the rounds this morning that renowned soul-blues singer Etta James passed away at the age of 73. The singer of hits like "Dance with Me Henry" and "Tell Mama" was a native of Los Angeles and often associated with that showbiz town, but New Orleans' steadfast R&B infrastructre brought her to the Crescent City countless times over the years, including appearances at Jazz Fest. Most recently, she played at the Fair Grounds 2009. James also recorded at Cosimo Matassa's legendary J & M Studios in the 1950s, recording a standout from her catalog that never caught on nationally called "Tough Lover." Hear it here.

Hurray For the Riff Raff

Audio Filé: A Celebrity Playlist Series

Hola Nola, and hola Hurray for the Riff Raff’s Alynda Lee Segarra. Still riding high after opening for Ani Difranco last week at the House of Blues, and about to embark on a ten day European tour, this country/rock/honky tonk assembly is (grass)rooted in NOLA atop two self-released albums- 2008's It Don't Mean I Don't Love You and 2010's Young Blood Blues.
