Louisiana Fifth Worst State in the U.S. for Working Fathers, Study Says

Ahead of Father’s Day on Sunday (6.18), a ranking of the best and worst states in America for working dads was released this week. Though Louisiana was ranked the second worst state in the U.S. for working mothers, patriarchs in the Boot don't fair much better. WalletHub conducted the survey, analyzing the fifty states and the District of Columbia on key criteria like childcare costs and average mens health. Louisiana ranked the fifth worst state in the study, beating out New Mexico (48), West Virginia (49), Nevada (50), and Mississippi (51) for quality of life for fathers.

Dueling Headlines

By Kat Stromquist

In response to the Louisiana Workforce Commission's employment report released Tuesday, we've got City Business reporting that the New Orleans area gained 1,000 jobs in April, whereas the Times-Pic assesses the situation as 1,000 jobs lost. Which is it? Is this a "glass half full" editorial decision, or just a failure of graph-reading? One thing's for sure – the GNO unemployment rate for April stands at 6.1 percent, a number far below the national rate of 9.9 percent. We'll stop complaining about our (low-paying, lacking-in-benefits, total-waste-of-our-degree-in-Renaissance-art-history) service industry jobs now.
