Libation Nation

Recipes for National Cocktail Day

Like most New Orleanians, the NoDef team enjoys a good cocktail ... or two, or three. The great thing about living in the Big Easy is that we really don't need any excuses to drink, but that doesn't stop us from finding new reasons all the same. (Cue today's Bourbon Festival and this month's absinthe celebration, for instance.) This Friday (3.24) is National Cocktail Day, the holiest of days for all fans of being spirited away. Today, mix up all-star cocktails with these recipes culled from NoDef interviews with NOLA's finest bartenders from years past.

Emeril's Carnival Cocktails (Recipes)

What is Carnival without a cocktail… or three? In honor of the season, the folks at Emeril’s New Orleans restaurants are rolling out some Mardi Gras specials on their list of libations. If you’re too busy with glue gunning your costume to make it out for a drink, you can still enjoy one at home. Recipes follow.

Gumbo Yeah-Yeah!

A Recipe from Emeril's for National Gumbo Day

Every day in Louisiana is a gumbo day, but for the rest of America, October 12th is National Gumbo Day. In honor of the holiday, NoDef sought out a great recipe for those who did not learn the secrets from their paw-paw. (Hint: First you make a roux). Emeril’s Chef de Cuisine David Slater was happy to oblige with this great recipe for Seafood Gumbo.

Chilling Effects (Cocktail Recipes)

A few minutes in the sauna that is all of NOLA outdoors right now will confirm that summer has officially begun. The best way to beat the heat is lots of water, but a refreshing adult beverage is also pretty helpful. NoDef’s friends at Emeril’s were kind enough to share a few of their favorite cocktails for y’all to test out at home. Click on through for recipes.

Cocktails for the Cold (Recipes)

Christmas Day has passed, but the holiday drinking season will continue until 2015. At NoDef, our noggins have had a little too much ‘nog. We turned to the experts over at Emeril’s for a few suggestions. They offered up recipes for Hot Buttered Rum, Limoncello, and a Poinsettia Cocktail.

Raising the Bar

Emeril's Evan Baldwin Mixes Up Christmas Drinks

Entering Emeril’s one is immediately enveloped but the distinct drum of happy chatter, and clinking glasses. Servers bustle around in white uniforms. Behind the bar stands Evan Baldwin holding court. With twelve years in the industry, including recent stints at Victory and Maurepas, Baldwin was well qualified to take the helm as Emeril’s new Bar Manager and Cocktail Coordinator five weeks ago. Just in time for Christmas, he took showcased some of the list’s new offerings for NoDef.

The Love Shuck

On National Oyster Day, a Little History and a Big Recipe

For the bivalve lovers out there, today is going to be a good one — it’s National Oyster Day.

National Pralines Day: 3 Recipes from Emeril Lagasse

While yesterday was National Pecan Sandy Day, it's not time to put down the nuts yet. June 24 marks National Pralines Day (yes, it's plural). Local devotees like Loretta's and Miss Tee Eva's will always satisfy sweet cravings, but the Day also marks a chance to try your own hand at the French-derived delicacy. Here are three recipes that prominently feature pralines, courtesy of Emeril Lagasse.

Top Chef NOLA's Winning Dish on Menu at Emeril's Restos

If you have not been keeping up with Top Chef NOLA, then Emeril’s restaurants have a spoiler on the menu. The winning dish from the final episode is on the menu at all of Emeril Lagasse’s New Orleans locations through February 23.

Reveillon Review

Menus and More on Where to Celebrate New Orleans' Holiday Fine Dining Tradition

New Orleans' rich tradition of rich foods pops up during the holiday season, with annual Reveillon celebrations in homes and restaurants throughout the city. NoDef runs down the list of prix-fixe (price-fixed) offerings for the Euro-centric Christmas Eve tradition.
